A close friend today told me something along the lines of:
“You’re a songwriter. You’re the kind of songwriter who could write a song every day for the next year.”
I said something that may or may not have been like this:
“Why yes, I could release 365 songs in 2010. Crappy songs, low-fi songs, fully-orchestrated songs that might sound professional, videos, etc. I could drink a lot of coffee and pair that with my daytime ‘writing’ gig and perhaps make this happen. But hey, instead, here’s an idea: why don’t I just release a song every Monday in 2010?”
My good friend smiled in support, encouraged me to do this thing and make this psychotic resolution. And in this society where New Year resolutions are often ‘lose 15 pounds’, ‘quit smoking’, ‘do not cancel social plans to watch LOST this year’, and so on, I feel it’s clear that ‘resolution’ is quite interchangeable with ‘challenge’ and there you have it, folks. I am embarking on what I will more kindly refer to from here on out as a ‘challenge’ for 2010. One song every Monday.
Dear god. What have I done.
