One Step At A Time Elizabeth Seward

YAY! I have another song. I think this one goes to make up for the first or second week of October. I’ll check back to make sure on that one. Anyway, it’s called ‘One Step At A Time’ and Ben Britz and I stayed up until 5 or 6am last night working on it. Check it out! It’s just a demo like all of the other songs, but I like it.

ONE STEP AT A TIME

Take it one step at a time

Take it one step at a time

Else you might forget

What’s behind you now

You moved on so quick

Take it one step at a time

That’s it.

Else you might forget

California: Please Vote YES for Prop 19
I’ll make a deal with you, Californians. Vote yes and get this thing to pass and I’ll move to your state sooner than later. Not that anyone cares, but listen, please? This is really important. It’s ridiculous and embarrassing that such a mild drug is still illegal while drugs with much more severe consequences, like alcohol, are readily available everywhere. The gas station, grocery store, the art gallery downtown… it makes incomprehensible sense that marijuana should continue to be illegal.

-Elizabeth

By GEORGE SOROS

Our marijuana laws are clearly doing more harm than good. The criminalization of marijuana did not prevent marijuana from becoming the most widely used illegal substance in the United States and many other countries. But it did result in extensive costs and negative consequences.

Law enforcement agencies today spend many billions of taxpayer dollars annually trying to enforce this unenforceable prohibition. The roughly 750,000 arrests they make each year for possession of small amounts of marijuana represent more than 40% of all drug arrests.

Regulating and taxing marijuana would simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars in enforcement and incarceration costs, while providing many billions of dollars in revenue annually. It also would reduce the crime, violence and corruption associated with drug markets, and the violations of civil liberties and human rights that occur when large numbers of otherwise law-abiding citizens are subject to arrest. Police could focus on serious crime instead.

The racial inequities that are part and parcel of marijuana enforcement policies cannot be ignored. African-Americans are no more likely than other Americans to use marijuana but they are three, five or even 10 times more likely—depending on the city—to be arrested for possessing marijuana. I agree with Alice Huffman, president of the California NAACP, when she says that being caught up in the criminal justice system does more harm to young people than marijuana itself. Giving millions of young Americans a permanent drug arrest record that may follow them for life serves no one’s interests.

Racial prejudice also helps explain the origins of marijuana prohibition. When California and other U.S. states first decided (between 1915 and 1933) to criminalize marijuana, the principal motivations were not grounded in science or public health but rather in prejudice and discrimination against immigrants from Mexico who reputedly smoked the “killer weed.”

Who most benefits from keeping marijuana illegal? The greatest beneficiaries are the major criminal organizations in Mexico and elsewhere that earn billions of dollars annually from this illicit trade—and who would rapidly lose their competitive advantage if marijuana were a legal commodity. Some claim that they would only move into other illicit enterprises, but they are more likely to be weakened by being deprived of the easy profits they can earn with marijuana.

This was just one reason the Latin American Commission on Drugs and Democracy—chaired by three distinguished former presidents, Fernando Henrique Cardoso of Brazil, César Gaviria of Colombia and Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico—included marijuana decriminalization among their recommendations for reforming drug policies in the Americas.

Like many parents and grandparents, I am worried about young people getting into trouble with marijuana and other drugs. The best solution, however, is honest and effective drug education. One survey after another indicates that teenagers have better access than most adults to marijuana—and often other drugs as well—and find it easier to buy marijuana than alcohol. Legalizing marijuana may make it easier for adults to buy marijuana, but it can hardly make it any more accessible to young people. I’d much rather invest in effective education than ineffective arrest and incarceration.

California’s Proposition 19, which would legalize the recreational use and small-scale cultivation of marijuana, wouldn’t solve all the problems connected with the drug. But it would represent a major step forward, and its deficiencies can be corrected on the basis of experience. Just as the process of repealing national alcohol prohibition began with individual states repealing their own prohibition laws, so individual states must now take the initiative with respect to repealing marijuana prohibition laws. And just as California provided national leadership in 1996 by becoming the first state to legalize the medical use of marijuana, so it has an opportunity once again to lead the nation.

In many respects, of course, Proposition 19 already is a winner no matter what happens on Election Day. The mere fact of its being on the ballot has elevated and legitimized public discourse about marijuana and marijuana policy in ways I could not have imagined a year ago.

These are the reasons I have decided to support Proposition 19 and invite others to do so.

2 months left!

I’ve been doing some reflecting on this whole releasing a song every Monday thing. Obviously I have missed some deadlines lately because my attention has been devoted to moving into a new house in a new city in a new state in a new part of the world. But I’m about to get myself back in gear and release songs to make up for lost dates, even more updates, even more pictures, even more videos, and I’ll even get myself in gear enough to start playing out in Austin asap. I want to milk everything I can out of these last two months of this project… perhaps even some collaborations (finally) if I can get to it. What’s so hard about shooting a track over to a friend in a different city and having them shoot me back a track with new parts? I DO NOT KNOW. I NEED TO DO THIS. I have so many talented friends all over the world who have all offered to partake in this project with me and I have been thankful and yet too busy to take advantage of their talent. I will try to fix this before the year is up.

Meanwhile, on your part, on your Tumblr, on your Facebook, please help me out! Suggest my page to your friends, reblog things, etc. I’m almost to 600 followers now and that’s been with minimal effort. I’d love to get over 1,000 before the year is up… because it’s a clean, nice, even number. So please! If you like any of the stuff I do, if you have liked ANY of the songs this year, please reblog them and refer your friends. It would mean a lot to me. ALSO:  recommend me for Tumblr Tuesday under the musicians section. People have been doing this apparently anyway without my coaxing, but a little extra push would help, at least I’m betting it would.

Otherwise, I’m very content here in Austin. The weather is nice, I have a lot of space to be creative with, and I’ve liked the people I have met so far. Life is a huge adventure, as cliche as that is to say, and this will certainly be a fun chapter of it.

He was a 19 year old student at Rutgers University.
After his college roommate tweeted “roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into Molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”, he lived-streamed Tyler having sexual relations with his boyfriend.
Tyler threw himself off a bridge after finding out.

Seth Walsh was a thirteen year old middle school student.
He was bullied to the point that he could not bear to live. “He spent a lot of his life frightened.” It was in person, through the internet, through phonecalls. His peers were relentless. He was perpetually picked on for his mannerisms and his style of dressing, even before he came out as gay.
His mother found him hanging from a tree in their backyard. He spent over a week lingering on life support before he died. Asher Brown

He was a 13-year-old eighth grader at Hamilton Middle School outside Houston His family says that he was “bullied to death”.

”Asher was tormented for being small. For his religious beliefs. For the way he dressed. And for being gay. His bullies acted out mock gay sex acts in phys ed class.”His parents repeatedly contacted school officials on his bullying. Nothing was ever done.
He shot himself in the head. Billy Lucas

He was a 15-year-old freshman at Greensburg High School in Indiana.
“Everyone made fun of him.” Like Asher, his school administration knew but did nothing.
A friend says the bullies would call Billy “gay and tell him to go kill himself.” Homophobic hate messages have been left on his facebook memorial page.

and there are more The death toll for this school year is already at 7.
Seven kids who have lost their lives because of hateful peers. It’s horrible that it’s taken tragedies like this to finally wake this nation up.

Like I said before, there’s a special place in hell for people who see evil shit being done and don’t do anything to stop it.

Cherish Elizabeth Seward

Ok! I realize I have some catching up to do. And I’ll be doing it over the next week or so—releasing songs frequent to make up for the weeks I lost during my move to Austin. Here’s the first make up song, to be counted for, hmm, September 21st. It’s called “Cherish” and it’s a total collaboration with Ben Britz. I hope you like it. PS: Really sorry for the many seconds of delay before the song began. I screwed up something while recording this and couldn’t move my tracks to the beginning. Maybe one day I won’t suck at recording.

CHERISH

This is the way these things go

They eat at you, tear you limb to limb

One day, before you know

You’ll be lyin’ next to nothin’ where you once laid next to him

So cherish the things you want to keep

I’m not better at this than anyone else is

We all make our messes, we are so selfish

Nobody, nobody, nobody knows what they got

Until it’s gone

So cherish the things you want to keep

This is not unlike your dreams

The good ones and the bad
