I really like theantitourist.com. I might be going abroad soon so I'll definitely try to check out some of those places. I just wanted to know what you think about "making it as an artist" especially in NYC. There are a lot of people out there saying that this city is no longer the place to be for young artists. Is it impossible or should we just be approaching it differently? What do you think?

Thank you! As far as making it as an artist—it depends a lot on how you define ‘making it’. I mean, really, you can do anything you set your mind to do, but in the music industry, people often set their minds to do things they might later find out they don’t actually want to do. NYC is a vibrant city filled with artists and I think it always will be. With that said, I’m planning on moving out—looks like to Austin. But that’s for a lot of reasons—not just the whole ‘being an artist in NYC’ thing. But nothing is impossible. Live where you want to live and work hard to do what you want to do there.

Low Class Tavet Gillson

I’m so happy about this song that I’m releasing it an hour and change before Monday Midnight. Why? Cause I like it. It wouldn’t be what it is without Ben Britz. He added virtually everything on this song except for the vocals/main guitar. Thank you! Check it out and if you like it, download it for free (only for a limited time) here.

LOW CLASS

Can’t chase the breath out
It’ll linger stone cold
Freeze the passing red
Mummify the bold
Can’t shake the rest out
It’s anchored in the sand
Releasing the chains would take days
And man after man
The warehouse is empty and overgrown
What has become has become
Wild and winding and taken in
The windows are gone but we don’t need them
They say you’re just low class
You’re just like trash
Yeah, you’re just low class
You’re just like trash
Low class with a brain
Low class with a, with a tongue on fire
Still you’re just low class
So just
Stand in the circle
Rocks pile, heavy as we could find
Shall we stone you bruised?
Or shall we stone you blind?
And you speak…
You say
“You can’t chase the breath out
It’ll linger stone cold
Freeze the passing red
And mummify the bold
You can’t shake the rest out
It’s anchored in the sand
Releasing the chains would take days
And man after man.

Hi Elizabeth, I actually met you briefly outside of Irving Plaza in NYC (waiting for a Circa Survive show) a few years ago, and I bought a copy of "Where the Stories Stay." I really enjoyed it and I love your solo stuff as well. What does your writing process usually entail? Is it just spontaneous or do you need to step away from everything to collect your thoughts and focus on what you're writing? Do you do any other types of creative writing like fiction or short stories?

Hey there! It’s really nice to hear from you and to know that someone who bought Devola cds back in the day is still checking out my stuff. Thank you. My writing…these days, my writing isn’t so spontaneous…it’s more like…”damn, it’s Sunday. I need to write a song for tomorrow”. :) Actually though, most of my music is inspired by my poetry (www.elizabethsewardpoetry.wordpress.com). I do need to step away to write the poems. I have worked on fiction and short stories—none of which are published. Poetry is my writing passion, but I also do travel writing professionally. I do it for a travel website I own, www.theantitourist.com, and sometimes for National Geographic too, www.intelligenttravelblog.com, as well as other misc. websites and magazines. It’s a good way for me to document what I’m seeing as I travel. Anyway, if there’s anything else I can answer for you, by all means, ask.

The End of You mp3 Elizabeth Seward

In short, this is one of my oldest solo songs that I still play. It is also one of my favorites. For whatever reason, I have played this song a lot live but I have never released it anywhere. Maybe I always thought it deserved a fancy studio, a drum set, multiple guitar tracks run through vintage amps. Scratch that, I KNOW I thought and still kind of think this song deserves that. But I’m traveling right now. And my plane might crash and then none of you would have heard this song, which would break my heart. So a live recording that Ben Britz made on his iPhone of Gary Leyder and I playing this song in his bedroom August 2009 is what you’re getting. It’s rough. There’s talking etc. before and after, but hopefully the spirit of the song will come through and you’ll hear it this way openly, the first way of many ways you’ll hopefully hear this song.

THE END OF YOU

Over the hills of the countryside I ran
Not from the dusk but from the
Lowering skies, I am not scared of this.
You waited for me to tell you
That I was doing fine but somewhere
In my escaping, I lost track of time

Maybe I will camp out here in the woods, I will
Embarrass my family, I’m
The cliche child so misunderstood, I’ll be
Hearing every sound a song and seeing
Every word a poem and
You were right along when you
Said I would never come home, well it’s just the

Antithetical stilling peace
Yielding only at the banks of release, it was the
Cabernet that made me this way
And I know you love to say that’s
Nothing but an excuse so just you wait
Till your veins are begging for it, too this
Engagement is off I had a
Long talk with
Love and we have
Mutually decided this- will be better for
Your wife, unaware of your mistress
Don’t dare follow me through the trees today
Instead, go to your bed and lay
Safely with someone who will guard your heart rather
Than chase a stranger who will only rip it apart
If you
Need an apology, just ask yourself what for? Cause you
Can always cleanse yourself in the morning from
The night before and
If you need to spread your love around just
Ornament your obsessions with the
Nice girls
At the pub downtown and if you
Never want to see my face again
Don’t be so quick to think your resentment is unique there were
Many before
You that have run shouting from these trees
Pull yourself together, dear, before this
Upwelling fury catches wind of your fear it’s getting
Really, really hot in here. I can see the
Pulsation of your heart through your chest In the mirror
Oh, my hands are decaying you, I can
See your bones when I touch you…it will be the
End of you if I ever love you
