—They Want Us All To Feel Like Them

I can’t believe it’s March already.  Anyway.  For today’s Monday song, I approached it a bit differently than usual.  Usually, I write my songs, pretty much without exception, on guitar.  I sat down at the piano for this song and wrote it yesterday.  I showed the talented Ben Britz the song and he recorded the (much-more-better-than-I-could-have-played-it) piano track and I added in vocals.  The song is also different lyrically.  Many of my songs are based in acrostic poetry and most of them are wordy.  This one has few words, no rhyme scheme or poetic challenge—just lyrics that came to me on the spot while writing the song.  It’s called “They Want Us All To Feel Like Them”.  IMPORTANT:  IF YOU LIKE THIS SONG, OH MY GOD, PLEASE PLEASE MAKE MY DAY AND REBLOG IT.  :)  Thank you.

THEY WANT US ALL TO FEEL LIKE THEM

Time is relative.

So is suffering.

Yes, mine is relative.

But I feel it anyway.

If the clouds covered the blue.

If the ocean covered the land.

No, I don’t know what I would do

Without a place to take a stand.

I guess I’d lay on my back and float.

I’m in love with a man who doesn’t love me back.

I guess I’ll lay on my back and float.

They want us all to feel like them.

They want us all to feel like them.

Don’t they ever lay on their backs and float?

—If you'll let me

I wasn’t really planning on releasing an ‘old song Friday’ today.  It’s blizzard-ing outside in NYC and the entire city is having a snow day…so I don’t know what I was planning on doing with my day instead of picking an old song for the day to release.  Nonetheless, it occurred to me that I had this old song laying around.  It’s a couple of years old although rarely performed live.  It’s called ‘If You’ll Let Me’.  Enjoy, pass it on, be nice to everyone.

If You’ll Let Me

I like to spell things out and then deny they are words

I like to open my mouth and speak of the unheard

I like to pronounce disbelief and then wear it

So everyone can see

How good this color looks on me

And I’ll wear it indefinitely

If you’ll let me.

I like to do things that are no good for my body

I take pride in the fact that no one here can stop me

From being a trainwreck

So whatchu gonna do about me?

Take back the things you said?

Well, sugar, please allow me.

I am an emotional masochist

But I still blame everyone else for making me feel like this

And every time I bleed

I hope to god it scars

So c’mon put your hands on me

Show me what a man you really are.

I might be a mess but at least I embrace it

Cause you’re spilling all over yourself

And you refuse to face it

But I’ll love you anyway

If you just let me.

I’ll love you anyway

But you gotta let me.

Saw these girls from Warpaint in New Orleans on Sunday night at One Eyed Jacks.  Loved it.  The music industry needs as many talented women, like these women, as possible.  Dear Warpaint: I’d open a show/tour for you in a heartbeat.

—Lost Cause

This song is called “Lost Cause”.  Sometimes you’re made to feel prisoner by someone in your life.  Usually that person is hurt so badly at the core of their self that they don’t realize how self-destructive they’re being by alienating everyone around them, manipulating, and hurting.  This song is my open letter to those people.

Quit using your ghosts against everybody else

We all have got our ghosts and we deal with them ourselves

One of these nights you’re gonna come home

And find no one is there

They all are gonna get tired of fighting for a cause

That is not there

Yeah.  You’re a lost cause.

You’re making and breaking all of your own laws.

Are you ready to die with no one by your side?

Are you ready to give back all that is mine?

Are you ready to stand in the front line

Waiting for the fire?

I’m not trying to say that this is your fault.

I’m not in the business of shifting blame.

But I know a thing or two about resentment

It multiplies when you give it a name.

I recorded this back in the fall.  Sometimes I think this song is too sweet for my own good, but it is honest, and honesty is all I can expect from myself and other artists.  Below are the lyrics:

You Seem Right

Say what is
On your mind and use all
The words you can find and don’t
Hold your breath because you are afraid and don’t lock
It up just to keep it
Safe
Cause your secrets can stay with me.
And I’m just so tired of always being wrong
Now you seem right, you seem right.
Believe my ribs are yours.
Enslaved never before.
Move into the dancing light.
You’re almost close enough to taste tonight.
Look into my eyes and
Imagine what it is like to be
Glossed over with love
Hoping for
The sky above to melt
Not for the crime
Of it but so
We can drink the very spine of it.
